A former regional director, Core co-leader and member since the CTN’s inception in 1990, Dr. Gill is closely involved in the daily care of people with HIV in his capacity as the medical director of the Southern Alberta HIV Clinic. Dr. Gill is also a professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Gill completed his undergraduate studies including his bachelor’s degree in sciences as well as his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Birmingham, and his master’s degree  at the University of Alberta. He also completed fellowships at both the University of Alberta and the University of Manitoba.

Dr. Gill’s work centres on HIV infection and addresses the following areas: antiviral therapy, antiviral resistance, opportunistic infections, and the epidemiology of HIV in Southern Alberta.

He was a co-investigator for CTN 222, which investigated the reasons behind more rapid than usual progression of liver disease in people co-infected with HIV and Hepatitis C. He was also the Canadian principal investigator for CTN 221, which tested the safety and efficacy of treating HIV-associated neuropathy with NGX-4010 or a capsaicin dermal patch. As well as being a knowledgeable and skilled clinician, Dr. Gill has published his HIV research widely in national and international journals.
