Mona Loutfy, MD, MPH

Dr. Loutfy is a clinician-scientist at Women’s College Research Institute and a professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. She serves as the director of the Women and HIV Research Program, which she founded at the Women’s College Research Institute in 2006. She is also a staff infectious diseases specialist at Women’s College Hospital, sees patients at the Maple Leaf Medical Clinic, and is the president and research director at Maple Leaf Research.

Dr. Loutfy obtained her undergraduate degree in honours chemistry at the University of Western Ontario.  She then completed an internal medicine residency and an infectious disease fellowship at the University of Toronto. She followed with a Master of Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health in 2002.

Dr. Loutfy’s work surrounds combatting HIV-related stigma and health inequities, access to care for women living with HIV, and reproductive health. She regularly travels to Saskatchewan to provide care for Indigenous women, couples and youth who are affected by HIV and HCV and live in rural and northern communities.

She was a CTN Postdoctoral Fellow from 2001–2003 and is currently an investigator for numerous CTN studies. She is the principal investigator for CTN

262: CHIWOS, a community-based cohort study aiming to assess the proportion, distribution and patterns of use and uptake of women-centred HIV care, and factors associated with service uptake among women with HIV living in Canada. Over the past fifteen years, Dr. Loutfy has mentored four CTN postdoctoral fellows and several other trainees interested in HIV research at various stages of their careers. Dr. Loutfy is currently mentoring CTN postdoctoral fellow Dr. Priscilla Medeiros and the two are co-principal investigators on CTN PT 040. She was also a co-principal investigator on CTNPT 023 with Dr. Troy Grennan. She is a co-investigator on many past and present CTN studies including CTN 214, 236, 238, 247, 254, 257, 272, 273, 299, 302, 314, CTNPT 013 and CTNPT 025, among others.

Dr. Loutfy served as co-lead of the Prevention and Vulnerable Populations Core with Dr. Cathy Worthington from 2012 to March 2019. She currently serves as the co-lead of the Clinical Care and Management Core with Dr. Jason Brophy.
