Dr. Wangari Tharao is a program and research manager at the Women’s Health in Women’s Hands Community Health Centre in Toronto. She served as co-chair of the African and Caribbean Council on HIV/AIDS in Ontario from 2004 to 2010. She is currently co-chair of the Governing Council of the African and Black Diaspora Global Network on HIV and AIDS, a network she co-founded during the International AIDS conference held in Toronto in 2006.

Dr. Tharao focuses on HIV issues relevant to women living in Canada who have immigrated from countries where HIV is a generalized epidemic. She led the development of an HIV disclosure intervention and toolkit which is currently being rolled out in AIDS service organizations across Ontario.

She has contributed to several CTN research publications on the subjects of women and HIV and HIV within the ACB (African, Caribbean, and Black) community. The most recent publication discussed sexual inactivity and sexual satisfaction among women living with HIV in Canada in the context of growing social, legal, and public health surveillance.
