CTN scores International Hat Trick
The CTN scores an international hat trick with three CIHR Meetings, Planning and Dissemination (MPD) Grants for international work in 2012.
Building on existing relationships and establishing opportunities for new collaborations, the latest MPD grants will allow the CTN to work on key research initiatives in Russia, China, and Colombia. The grants are directed at building capacity, collaboration and knowledge translation for enhancing HIV research. Having this funding is crucial for CTN international programming. It provides a strong base from which to extend our work to the international forum.

In Russia, the MPD grant ($15,820) will go towards the completion of planning activities with research colleagues at Pavlov State Medical University and the Leningrad Regional AIDS Center in St. Petersburg. CTN researchers Dr. Wendy Wobeser and Mirek Piascezny will travel to Leningrad in January 2012 to work on sharing database information between countries. There are also plans underway to develop and deliver an Investigator Workshop in St. Petersburg in the near future. |

In China, CTN investigator Dr. Jean-Pierre Routy has initiated a research collaboration with Professor Li of the Peking University Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) in Beijing. Drs. Routy and Li share a mutual interest in immune system changes after HIV infection and subsequent immune system recovery. The initial MPD grant ($16,200) provides seed funding to explore larger collaborations. A few initial ideas include exploring joint publications, training and development initiatives, and international clinical trials. Dr. Li has also expressed an interest in learning more about the CTN structure in order to develop a similar network of clinical trials researchers in China. |
In addition to these three new opportunities, the CTN is also collaborating with researchers in Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Brazil, and Argentina as well as sponsoring two international postdoc fellowships.
